Attention: The Spotlight -vs- Floodlight

Attention is essential for learning and decision-making.

It allows us to focus on relevant information and filter out distractions.

It's necessary to process information deeply for understanding and memory.

With this flood of information, how's your attention span going?

Spotlight -vs- Floodlight.

When it comes to attention (and we are all in the attention economy), here's a distinction.

The spotlight is like concentration.

It has a narrow width and a focused beam.

It's zoomed in on one thing. Yes one thing.

Whereas a floodlight, pans out wider, akin to awareness (mindfulness).

It’s where you notice the bigger picture.

Like the temperature in the room you’re in, instead of focusing on it, you're aware of it.

Both forms of attention are needed.

Meditation helps you train both.

It starts with concentration. Then awareness.

And the yardstick of your progress...is equanimity...having a mental balance during the day-to-day.
